Origins of Mexico
This page gives a brief but concise presentation of the origins of Mexico, mainly the origins of the Toltec and Aztec (Mexicas) peoples and their rise as large civilizations.  The site of their capital city, Tenochtitlan, on lake Texcoco, is now the site of present day Mexico City. The Templo Mayor Museum (En/Sp) will help to inform you on Aztec archeology and culture.

Echoes of the Aztec Culture
A good site for students, here you can find titles including Early Aztec History, Early Spanish History, Similarities with the Spanish and Aztec Religions, the Aztec City, and Food and other aspects of the Aztec culture.  Has decent graphics and very readable text.

The Aztec/Spanish Encounter
Mainly a text based site, The Aztec/Spanish Encounter presents information on cultural interaction under the titles of Cultural Perception and Spanish Motivations.

The Aztec Calendar: The Pointer    Excellent graphics and well designed, this site is dedicated solely to the Aztec Calendar. Another good, very detailed site with more sociological information is The Aztec Calendar at U. of Minnesota.  For brief, more general information on the Sun Stone, try Aztecs and the Sun Stone and The Aztec Sun Stone.

Tlahuica Culture Home Page
Dr. Michael E. Smith, a renown scholar on Aztec culture, has put together a four star archeology site on the Aztec people at Tlahuica, an ancient site near the modern city of Cuernavaca.

Ancient Mesoamerican Civilizations
This four star U. of Minnesota site covers extensively all civilizations of Mesoamerica.  Although generally without graphics or techno bells and whistles, this site is great text from professional archeologists.  For a good look at Aztec manuscripts, try GB Online's page entitled Aztec Manuscripts. Another four star archeology site with great resources for mesoamerican archeology is the U. of Minn/Deluth Archeology Page.

The Buried Mirror  The Buried Mirror page at the U. of Michigan is extremely well designed and informative, with superb hypertext links to explanations of places, people, etc. as you come across them in the text. 

Aztlan E-Journal
This four star site on-line journal presents a number of academic papers of interest to serious students of ancient Mexican civilizations. 

Mexico: Biography of Power
Chapter one of what looks to be an intriguing history of modern Mexico (1810-1996) by Enrique Krauze details and discusses the ideological and political manipulation of the image of the ancient Aztecs (and contemporary) in the period from 1810 to 1996.
